There are two different types of magnetic heads used in the NCR HiCo card readers. This ATM parts are electrically and mechanically the same but the assemblies are different parts with different part numbers. The flex cable pin out is what keeps these two assemblies from being interchangeable between the MCRW and IMCRW. The 998-023-5684 assembly is specifically for the MCRW HiCo card readers. The Sankyo SBW237705 assembly is specifically for the HiCo IMCRW card readers.

The tables below show the pin out configuration for both the 998-023-5684 and the SBW237705 HiCo heads. For reference a third table is included showing the pin out configuration for the LoCo 998-023-5655 head which has the same pin out configuration as the SBW237705.

Notice that pin out positions 6, 7, 8 & 9 for the HiCo IMCRW are reversed from the MCRW. This is accomplished by reversing the read section for the IMCRW as compared to the read section for the MCRW. The connections coming out the back of the head are thus reversed providing the pin out change for the two types of HiCo magnetic card reader assemblies.
